about me
Hello! I am Dr. Hege Riise, licensed psychologist in Florida.
I received my doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, completed my doctoral internship at New Mexico State University and my postdoctoral residency at Arizona State University. I grew up in Norway and have lived all over the US for the last 20+ years. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my spouse and rat terrier. I also love reading, video games, arts and crafts, and practicing yoga. I am even a registered yoga teacher.
I have spent my career working with diverse clients who have come to me with a variety of challenges. I specialize in providing treatment of trauma, particularly trauma stemming from interpersonal violence and abuse. I also have a special love for supporting gender, sexual, and relationship minorities (e.g., LGBTQ+, kink) and have worked as an ally and advocate for LGBTQ+ individuals, including providing assessments for gender affirming care.
As your future psychologist, I would love to partner with you in your journey towards greater wellbeing. The challenges we face in life can lead to pain and suffering and can feel overwhelming to manage. Together, we can work to make that change. I can help you take the first steps on your healing journey so you can feel empowered to make decisions that makes sense for you and support you as you learn to trust your inner wisdom and feel confident in navigating relationships.
Creating change can be difficult and you might experience a lot of different emotions from fear to hope to excitement. While there are no guarantees with psychotherapy, I am offering you a space aimed at empowering you to make decisions about your life so you can take action that is aligned with your values. That space is filled with gentle honesty, encouraging challenges, and hopefully laughter. My aim is to help you build skills, gain knowledge, and develop your resources so you can live your life in a way that is meaningful to you.
My approach to therapy grounded in being trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive. In my work with clients, I work from an interpersonal lens that is informed by mindfulness, values, acceptance, and cognitive and behavioral interventions. I see clients I work with from a multicultural lens, considering how your intersecting identities affect your life. I emphasize collaboration in our work together and invite you to be as open and honest in our work together as you would be with yourself.
